100 Years of Cowin & Co.’s Family Owned Business
Cowin & Company, Inc. has been in the business of giving customers what they want for a century. Our underground construction tradition began with mining engineer Percy G. Cowin, who established the Birmingham-based mine construction company in 1924.

We’re proud to consistently attain key safety milestones. Cowin was recently honored with the esteemed Joseph A. Holmes Safety Award by the state of West Virginia. This prestigious recognition celebrates our excellence in mine safety as an independent contractor.
With breakthrough safety protocols, Cowin’s commitment to safety extends beyond our employees to include subcontractors and suppliers. Adhering to our stringent guidelines for project safety, they must also actively participate in our comprehensive safety process, which includes a substance abuse program.
Heading our safety initiatives is a company officer with over 20 years of industry experience. Collaborating closely with MSHA, OSHA, our insurers, and our employees, he ensures the effectiveness and compliance of our company safety program.
With a track record of a century of successful mining and drilling ventures, coupled with our team and skilled management, Cowin & Co. remains at the forefront of the underground construction industry and is still being led by the Cowin Family and its mining tradition. The Past 100 Years
Most of Cowin’s mine construction during the 1930’s and 1940’s was in Alabama and surrounding states. With the decline of coal and iron ore mining in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the underground construction company diversified, turning to highway, railroad, hydro and sewer tunnel engineering and construction. Diversification brought expansion into the mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states where clients quickly discovered our dependable reputation.
As President for fifty years, John Cowin left his imprint of excellence and integrity on the mining construction company which is now well-respected by customers, peers, suppliers and employees.
Our employee's safety is the main emphasis of our company culture. Our supervisors average over 20 years of experience in the industry.

Cowin & Co. is entirely American-owned and operated, ensuring a hands-on approach to our projects. Subcontracting is minimal; our “in-house” capabilities cover nearly all aspects of underground construction. From site preparation and grouting to exploration drilling, shotcreting, concrete construction, and the installation of permanent equipment, machinery, and piping, we handle each phase, guaranteeing personalized attention to your project.
Our experienced team, with most foremen boasting 15 to 30 years of dedicated service, exemplifies professionalism. With our history spanning ten decades, Cowin has successfully completed numerous construction projects, including those of intricate complexity.
